Mentioning those great danes reminds me of friends of mine many years back who owned a couple. Cleo the oldest at about 4 was pretty docile but as an experiment I ran away from her and Sharon, her owner, sent her after me. Cleo had never been trained to chase someone but she bounded after me and grabbed my wrist and wouldn't let go. She didn't bite me but the next day I had bruises. Something somewhere within her instincts must have told her that's what she had to do.
Cleos brother, Oscar, on the other hand, was one of the the dopeyist dogs you could ever meet. Admittedly, he was a 12 month old puppy, albeit wieghing in at about 14 stone and standing 6 and a half feet on his hind legs. There was just one problem. He was scared of the dark. We didn't know this until we all had a walk out into the country to a pub near where Sharon and her husband Dennis lived. We toddled off in the evening sunlight for a pint or two and as the night fell decided we should return home so I could start the long drive back to London. Cleo was fine, off she bounded down the lane, lost from sight within a few metres as there was no street lighting but Oscar was having none of it. Once the failing light went he stood stock still. No manner of enticing, threatening or cajoling him worked. He was like a statue, or very nearly except for the shaking. He had his eyes tight shut and shook like a jelly. There was only one thing for it. I picked him up and carried him the mile home with him trembling in my arms until we reached their gate, upon which he decided he was getting down and ran in. In those days Oscar and I weighed about the same.
For a number of reasons I never got to see them again and have often thought about him, he was actually a lovely dog, dark gray, really nice features and nigh on the size of a small pony, who thought the best way of sitting down was to back up to a human and sit on their lap with his front paws on the floor pinning the poor victim to the seat. To this day, he still owes me a ride home.

That was a full weekend, nothing special, just alot of nothing special.
Today seemed to have a bit of an animal theme to it though. I was driving on the Esher-by-pass when I came across a couple of hens just walking down the pavement looking as though they were just out for a Sunday stroll. A couple of miles further on, whilst going past the Walton reservoirs upon the slopes of which graze a flock of sheep, stood one of their number on top of a big concrete block. He was moving from one set position to another and I can only suppose he was posing for a possible statue of himself and just checking out which stance would suit. Lastly, going through Walton itself was a woman trying to control not one, not two, but three fully grown Great Danes, trying being the operative word as they probably weighed a good 40-45 stone between them, (excluding the woman).

We've just heard that the flat next door failed to make it's reserve price so it will remain empty for a bit longer. Hurrah! It actually serves the freeholder right because they've let the upkeep of the block go over the last few years and now they get to reap the rewards, or lack of them.
I now know they'll accept offers at £155.000. Anybody know what tomorrows winning lottery numbers will be?

This weeks Friday Five.
When was the last time you...
1. ...sent a handwritten letter?
Just over two years ago. When a friend in Australia finally got e-mail that was it. The nearest I have managed since then is a handwritten memo a couple of weeks back but I think I've lost the physical ability to write for a long time, even letters I could handwrite I choose to type.
2. ...baked something from scratch or made something by hand?
I am the cook at home but I'm afraid we've become the kings of convenience foods. Stick it in the oven and 30 minutes later I take it out again. If you count drawing as making something then it would be some conservatory drawings that I am doing at the moment.
3. ...camped in a tent?
That would be the best part of 30 years ago when I was in the scouts and that was still far too recent for me. Lying awake at 5:30 a.m. on a rapidly deflating airbed in a freezing field at Stoke Poges is not conducive to starting you out on a life under canvas, although it did seem to be for others. The nearest you'll get me to a tent in future is if one falls of a shelf on top of me!
4. ...volunteered your time to church, school, or community?
I did help out with The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association a few years back but since then I've been very insular. I used to be a blood donor and the recent t.v. ads have been pricking at my conscience so if they'll still have me I think I'd better do that.
5. ...helped a stranger?
On a very low level it was Wedesnday night when someone was trying to find the tennis at Wimbledon and I gave them directions.

O.K. If we presume that D3sk B is a cat, and the fact that we were trying to keep it fairly secret from our present employers might be a bag, then I can inform you that the cat is slowly emerging from the bag.
A manager two levels above me now knows that at some point in the future I might be going. Due to my pretty atrocious sales figures recently he has put 2 and 2 together and managed to get 25. That's way out, but he could have put 2 and 2 together and reached 12 and been pretty accurate.

In years gone past the record industry has complained about cassettes, allowing the home recording of l.p.'s, killing the music industry, then the arrival of c.d's meant that recording onto cassettes at better quality would kill the music industry, now it's the downloading of MP3s which will almost certainly cause the demise of music as we know it. I suppose if I came down on one side of the fence or another I'd probably support the downloader rather than the music industry but I can understand why artists get mightily pissed off when their stuff appears for free for all to download, particularly in advance of release.
However, that wasn't the point I meant to make, (he says waffling). Yesterday, on Radio 1, they played the likely forthcoming single from Queens of the Stone Age, but not a review copy, not a press release edition or white label acetate but by downloading it from the net.
I don't think the music moguls stand much chance of stopping individuals getting hold of tracks by dowload but I do think they have a point when radio stations do it. Am I guilty of applying double standards? I don't think so, whatever the rights or wrongs of the situation I think the wider industry should play fair, particularly the national broadcasting stations who should set an example.

Over the years it has been really good to have had Wimbledon as part of my sales area. It's always been a good producer of business and it's not too bad for driving through, not too many one way roads and plenty of connections between the main roads. However, for two weeks of the year we all desperately hope that we got no appointments in the vicinity of the All England Tennis Club not so much because the through traffic is heavy, most people use public transport, but because one reason they do so is that it is impossible to park due to temporary restrictions. The worst day of all is "Peoples Saturday" which tends to have by far the largest crowd and so you can imagine my delight on returning home to find I have an 11:00 a.m. appointment on Somerset Road, 50 yards from the main entrance.
I hope they have a driveway with enough room for my car!

A car decided to have a bit of a bump about 50 yards down the road from us in the early hours of the morning. We used to get quite a few, well, a couple of times a year, but it's been a bit quiet lately and luckily we've never had a really, really bad one.
We have a very high kerb at the side of the road and one day a car went into the side of a mini which was parked. The kerb is about 50% up the height of a minis wheels and it just sheered the bodywork straight off the axles. It was dramatic, and I wouldn't be overly confident of how well a mini would do in a proper smash, but it was a clean break with all the undercariage sat in the road and all the bodywork nicely sat on the pavement. It was just as if someone had lifted the top off and placed it to one side.
When I lived in the house opposite where I am now, my dad decided he would have all the front garden done, it was landscaped, as much as a front suburban garden can be, and an ornate wall was built facing the road. A few days after it was completed, at about 3:30 a.m., my brother who would have been about 8 at the time wandered into my parents bedroom and announced, "a cars just driven into the wall". My mum says she never ever so my Dad move as quickly again as he did at that moment. My brother had failed to identify the fact that it was the wall two houses down and as a reward for his speed my dad did get to see our next door neighbour but one running down the road shaking her fist at the motorist who'd abandoned his car and was legging it eastward as fast as possible.
Having checked there's no sign of damage from last night so hopefully it was just another small dent in another piece of mobile metal and no real harm done.

The week after next Kev & I are going Up North. We need to visit some suppliers in Middlesborough, Hull, Wakefield and Chesterfield. Day one will consist only of Middlesborough and the trip back to our Chesterfield base with one important addition. I'll be calling in "home".
Home for me is Leeds. I have not lived there since I was 1 year old, less than 2.5% of my life, yet I cling to the idea of there being home as most Yorkshiremen in exile do, no matter where we dredge up. Funnily enough though, the area of Leeds I think of as home, Armley, never was. Armley was where my Grandma and Grandad moved to a couple of years after we came to London. All our holidays were spent there, at 5 Aviary Street, and I can still visualise the front room, the kitchen and the stairs leading down to the cellar. The memory is so fresh. I actually cannot tell you where I did live for the first year. My grandparents ran a greengrocers in the Hyde Park area but the exact location is a mystery to me. I must ask Mum because I would like to see what's there now.
Much of Leeds has changed, I haven't been back often in the last 20 years, and each time I do another bit has gone or had a road put through the middle of it. I nearly got to go work in Leeds 20 years back but it didn't happen much as I would have liked it to have done. My dad on the other hand couldn't wait to escape which is how we ended up down here, although I may be being a little unfair as I think they partly moved to London because I needed a couple of years of treatment that only Great Ormond Street Hospital could give.
When I go back this time I don't know what I'll find. I hope most of my landmarks are still there and as I remember them. Armley Jail, the Library on Branch Road, I think, the bridge over the canal at Canal Road and please let Grandmas house still be there. I know one day it won't be, as they systematically redevelop the area, getting rid of the two up, two down houses that made up much of the housing stock in the area, with the washing strung up from one side of the road to the other, the outside toilets at the end of the row of 5 houses, and the cobbled streets. It's sounds like a Hovis advert but I don't mean it to, it was just like that.
I can just remember the steam trains going through Armley Station, and sometimes we would go to the road bridge over the line, watch the train come to our side of the bridge and then we'd dash across the road to watch it disappear into Leeds Central, not Leeds City Station as it is now. There were still trolley buses, the number 72 I think, going from Leeds out to Bradford and the 49 bus to Farnley from the bottom of Aviary Road.
I'm glad I still remember it so clearly, because as I say, one day it will be gone and I have so many memories of happy childhood holidays and some of the people who lived there. Kids of my age who will no doubt have kids, if not grandkids, of their own. Some of the old people, like my grandparents, who will be long gone. As long as some of it's the same that's all that matters. We all need to retain some of our childhood in us but it helps to see that the memories do have a real foundation and the walls I played football up against are still there.

I can understand why they give footballers, athletes and other sportsmen/women media courses, but it does lead to some dreadful interviews. The have a tendency to go like this;
commentator : So now that you train out in Los Angeles how are you affected by this weather? (Hot & Humid)
athlete : Well, now that I train out in Los Angeles this weather affects me less.
commentator : And were you pleased with clocking your personal best for this season?
athlete : Yeah, I was really pleased with clocking my personal best for this season.
Maybe I'm being unfair, not all sports people can be Oscar Wilde, and God knows, this blog isn't exactly the height of erudition, but just a little more thought in how you teach them to answer the question could make the interview a bit more pleasant for all concerned I'm sure.

This weeks Friday 5. Well, it's still Friday in the U.S.
1. Do you live in a house, an apartment or a condo?
A two-bedroom apartment, (maisonette), with one bedroom moved over to being my very messy office.
2. Do you rent or own?
A large proportion of the property, and my soul, are owned by the mortgage company.
3. Does anyone else live with you?
My long term (21 years) girlfriend.
4. How many times have you moved in your life?
Only 5 times and two of those were moving away and back to this flat for a couple of years on business. In fact, apart from those two years in Birmingham I've lived on one side of this road or the other since I was 4 and a half years old. That means 90% 0of my life living within a 30 metre distance. Not the most adventurous of lives then!
5. What are your plans for this weekend?
Bit of work, bit of relaxing, friends on Saturday night, and maybe even a car boot sale on Sunday if the weather's good.

I've been listening to a couple of reports on two stories in tonights news. Firstly, The Liz Hurley baby paternity result and secondly Italian club sack Korean hero.
I listened to a couple of people arguing the toss about who was the wronged party, but the Bing supporter managed to completely blow his case out of the water by stating that "Liz Hurley should have been more careful". I'm sorry!!!! Multi-millionaire Bing obviously hasn't heard of condoms. It bothers me not whether she deliberately got pregnant or not but if he wasn't going to take responsibility then he can hardly bleat about it afterwards. It just goes to prove that having money doesn't always mean you have brains.
If I was the Korean player I suspect I would have been pretty pissed off at the news I was sacked until my agent pointed out that Perugia will have to honour all the contract payments, release him as of now, and his wages may just go up based on the fact that he was "the man that killed off Italian Football". Perugia should stand on their own two feet rather than bowing to the Italian press. If Italy are out then there's at least 11 other players who needed sacking first and at least it would be for legitimate reasons.

Lots of love
Bianca
P.S. Please send some stamps!!!!
It turns out when she left, her mum only had a couple of stamps on her and told her to buy some more to send some cards, but who of us when 10 years old would want to spend our pocket money on stamps.

I'm sick and tired of the patronising way that some adverts treat their audience. I'm sure that won't come as a shock to anyone as I'm not certain how many aren't patronising at some level. The one that is giving me most pain at the moment is the Renault Clio ad. I can stand little of it anyway but the really annoying bit is at the end when the actor or whoever he is says "...is it the "joie de vivre" or "je ne sais quoi"" or why don't they just throw in some other phrases the average Brit might vaguely recognise like "plume de ma tante" and "avez vous un cuppa", the latter for those old enough to remember the P G Chimps. If they want to do an advert with some French dialogue then at least do us the courtesy of treating the audience as though they might understand a foreign language. At least when Audi started their "vorsprung durch technik" campaign they used what I presume is a proper German phrase, rather than liberally interspersing the ad with "Achtung" or other phrases we might have picked up from watching WWII films.
End of rant!

I've enjoyed them, even though they have been quite "stressful" to watch. They have also courted controversy, particularly over the infamous deep-fat fryer scene.
I don't know how realistic it was to the life of a spy in MI5 and whether they say it is or not can you expect an honest answer? There's another series next year so I'll probably keep an eye out for it.

We have had the luxury for the last few weeks of no-one living in one of the flats next door to us so it's been really quiet. Not that it was ever really bad but the walls are rather thin and people walking up and down stairs or running a bath are audible, particularly late at night or early in the morning. Because I don't go to bed until after 1am and try not to wake up until 8-8:30 I'm sure this is a problem for others as well as us as I no doubt disturb them as they go to sleep and they wake me up in the morning.
The flat goes to auction on the 26th of this month. If we could afford it we would buy it and as there are still 3 lottery draws before then we have not given up hope! :) But assuming there will be new owners we will have the anxious wait as to whether it involves screaming kids, loud music, diy or renovation, or whether we are lucky and get a nice quiet single or couple.
If anyone's got just short of £200,000 they'd like to donate to the "Keep Kennamatic Kalm & Kwiet" campaign please leave your name, number and bank details in the comments section!
Thankyou.

I spoke to a guy called Peter Karataos yesterday. You'll not have heard of him but he's a really important person in mine and Lindas relationship, or at least he was and probably will be again. He's Lindas Psychiatrist/Psychologist, I can never remember which.
Regular readers know that Linda has O.C.D. What I've not spoken about until now, is that the stress that a person is put under when they live with someone with OCD has meant I have been receiving counselling for the last couple of months.
Four or so years back, Linda was referred to Peter to sort out some of the problems she had in her life with regard to her mother who had died a few years earlier. Peter helped a great deal, but due to the lack of NHS funding for the psychology unit he worked for, they closed down, and Lindas therapy stopped. It was from then she developed OCD. Part of my "treatment" is that we need to be in a position to convince Linda she needs to get help. I know that the best chance is if Peter could see her again, and having tracked him down through a somewhat tortuous route that started with a google search, I got hold of him.
He would be willing to see her again although it might have to be privately, (insert whatever noise a severe squeeze to the financial status emits), although he thinks, as both of us are affected by it, we might get NHS funding.
I don't know whether she'll agree to see him, it will have to be handled very carefully if it's to happen, but for the first time in ages, there is a slight positive to look forward to there. I hope she does, because there are only three possible scenarios. She get's help and the situation improves, she doesn't and I eventually suffer some sort of breakdown through the stress, or she doesn't and I leave. The last is the worst option for me to contemplate yet the one that all the advice leads towards as it is the one that protects me best.
I don't know what will happen but somethings got to give.

I realised yesterday evening just how much freedom D3sk B is going to give me. I haven't sold anything for the other lot for about 6 weeks, not my worst slump ever but rapidly getting that way and lord knows I need some income! Selling's like that sometimes, you don't change what you do particularly but you go into a run of "bad luck" and at the moment to be honest I couldn't hit a cows arse with a banjo!
Boss John rang me this evening to see if anything had turned up as his boss had been saying he was going to withhold my bonus, (due next week), as he thought it might motivate me to go out and sell. John, to his credit, told him not to be a pratt so I will get paid, although it isn't very much. This would normally at least have me going off on one but I'm completely indifferent to it. I don't care one way or the other and that might also be another reason I'm not selling at the moment!
It's a great release though, realising how those who have threatened and controlled you for years suddenly are impotent and have no threat great enough to worry you. If push comes to shove I can walk away in an instant.

Kev has been at a meeting over the last two days for Herbalife. It's been a meeting for all their European representatives although many have flown over from Australia and America. It's a possible sideline for D3sk B if we want but we'll see. I went to meet some of them this evening to ask some difficult questions without having gone through any "indoctrination" that might have gone on. One question was handled well, but the moment I asked about the marketing set-up there was a great deal of prevarication. This is normal with MLM set-ups, sometimes because the person doesn't really understand it and therefore fudges the question and sometimes because they really don't want anyone to look too closely. I'll no doubt be seen as "negative", not that that bothers me.
Whilst I've never studied marketing or really worked in the industry my father has been in marketing my entire life and you can't be that involved with someone and some knowledge of it not rub off. Anyway, we'll see what happens.

It's hot and sticky tonight. I hate this weather in the early hours of the morning when it's time to go to bed and I guess there's worse to come over the next few months.

Restricted myself to two new c.d.s today, Eminems - The Eminem Show and Moby - 18.
Listened to most of 18 and it's pretty good although I think I need to be in a slightly different mood to really appreciate it. Having tried Eminem yet but I'd be surprised not to like it.
Another c.d. I'd like to get and can't track down in the real world is Los Pacaminos. This is Paul Youngs new band and is a sort of tex-mex mix. I've only heard a bit but I think it's just right for this sort of weather. I guess it's going to have to be a purchase from Amazon then. My plastic is going to melt at this rate.

The weather's been nice today although sitting in an air conditioned car is the only way I can stand it. Didn't have to do too much work so I had a relaxing day for once. Did some geocaching which entailed me climbing to the top of The Monument. 202 feet high, 311 steps, and not a good idea for an overweight chap who suffers from vertigo. The only good thing was by the time I was in a position to look down to ground level I was so short of oxygen my vision had all but gone. :)
Finished the day by buying Ace by Ian van Dahl. I haven't had a chance to listen to the whole thing yet but I like what I've heard. It doesn't surprise me as I think I pretty much like everything that's been released as singles. The only problem is I feel a c.d. shopping spree coming on and I know of at least three more I want to buy and tomorrow seems a likely candidate.
Off to see my mummy for lunch tomorrow so I should get a bit of pampering for once.
